Why Vitamin C Is Good For Skin

You may find plenty of vitamin C in delicious fresh fruits and vegetables, but that’s not the only way to enjoy its benefits! Vitamin C is an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory nutrient that can also be applied topically to improve the skin. It's also becoming the skin care industry’s favourite ingredient. Read below to find out why!

Why Vitamin C Is Important For Skin

Vitamin C is a fantastic ingredient that may help slow early skin aging, prevent sun damage, and improve the appearance of wrinkles, dark spots, and acne. Vitamin C is an antioxidant, so it provides protection against oxidative stress-induced cellular damage (think radiation from the sun etc).

Vitamin C Serums

Due to the incredible results of Vitamin C, the ingredient has taken the beauty world by a storm! You can easily google "Vitamin C serum" and find a range of products to choose from.

We are currently in love with TEMPLE SPA's LET'S CONCENTRATE Skin Glowing Serum, a cruelty-free, high-performance, innovative gel serum enriched with intelligent active ingredients that work to reduce the appearance of age spots and hyperpigmentation. It also has a delicious natural orange zest aroma, which smells divine when applying the serum to your skin. You can find (and test!) LET'S CONCENTRATE in any of our spas, click here to find your nearest spa. After cleansing and toning, simply massage LET'S CONCENTRATE onto your face and neck. You can also rub the serum onto your hands!

How Vitamin C Is Absorbed

Vitamin C is a small enough molecule that it can readily pass through cell membranes to be absorbed. When applying Vitamin C serum, it is recommended you allow your serum to absorb for 60-90 seconds, so it has time to penetrate the skin. Be sure to then follow up with a moisturiser to lock in the benefits of your serum and provide a protective barrier for your skin. Vitamin C becomes unstable when exposed to light, so we recommend finishing your beauty routine with a strong SPF to protect your skin and the benefits of using Vitamin C for your skin.

For Vitamin C supplements, they are best taken in the morning, as water-soluble supplements are best absorbed on an empty stomach. Please consult your GP before taking supplements though.

Will Vitamin C Help Acne?

Vitamin C contains anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce the redness and swelling of skin that comes with acne, so is a recommended product for those suffering with the skin condition. While it may not help rid your skin of acne, it will help reduce how the spots appear on your face. If you suffer from acne, we recommend seeking a GP as depending on the cause of acne, skin products alone are unlikely to clear up the condition.

Is Vitamin C Good For Sensitive Skin?

Vitamin C serum does offer a number of skin care benefits for those with sensitive skin, though caution is always advised. Vitamin C can be very acidic, so may cause skin irritation for some people, particularly in products that contain high concentrations. Try adding Vitamin C slowly, in a product with lower dosage to test the reaction on your skin. Look for lower concentrations of L-ascorbic acid (LAA) or its derivatives instead, as this is the purest version of vitamin C, and most effective at a low pH, meaning it is less likely to irritate the skin.
