Scrubbing Up

Using a body scrub or exfoliator should be an integral part of your body cleansing routine.  Whatever name your product goes by; scrub, polish or gloss, the exfoliating ingredient needs to be abrasive enough to remove dead skin cells but not too strong so as not to damage healthy skin.

4 reasons why you should be body scrubbing

If you're not using a body scrub then you're missing out on a number of benefits that other skin care products don't provide. So just what are the benefits of a body scrub?

No.1 Fresh, Rejuvenated Skin

The biggest benefit of using a body scrub is the removal of dead skin cells and impurities, leaving you feeling fresh and your skin looking rejuvenated and revitalized.

No.2 Skin Looks More Youthful

Body scrubbing removes dead skin cells; a build-up of dead skin cells causes the skin to look dull and lacklustre. We shed skin cells daily (anywhere from 11,000-23,000 skin cells an hour), exfoliating aids this process. Using a body scrub regularly will help make your skin look more vibrant and youthful.

No. 3 Moisturizing Benefits

Through the removal of dead skin cells, exfoliating allows for easier absorption of moisturising products.  Most body scrubs now contain moisturisers but it’s always good to slap on a little extra after drying yourself off, the richer the better, like a nice Shea Butter.

No.4 Better Self-Tanning

It is essential to exfoliate prior to applying self-tan in order to achieve an even, professional result.  If you don't do this then it is likely that you will end up with a blotchy look, the self-tan will cling to dry skin areas where dead skins cells have accumulated (such as the elbows and knees), so a good scrub first will ensure an even coverage and a flawless finish.

How and when

It is sufficient for most of us to use a scrub once or twice a week. The easiest way is in the shower, start at your ankles and work upwards in gentle, circular motions.  Avoid using too much pressure; let the product will do the work.  Natural, plant or mineral based scrubs are kindest to the environment, sugar and salt scrubs are popular ingredients and are particularly effective, you may also find pumice in exfoliating products; it tends to be a gentler exfoliator due to its finer texture, so kinder to more sensitive skin.
